SpamAssassin

This is a spam filter that uses several current techniques to filter spam including Bayesian filtering.

SpamAssassin is a mail filter that identifies spam mail and helps segregate these. It uses several of currently well known techniques such as text analysis, Bayesian filtering, DNS block lists, and collaborative filtering databases. This is adapted for Windows by the publishers from a product of the Apache Software Foundation. When used in combination with an MTA (Mail Transport Agent), e.g. Hamster or MS Exchange, it is a very effective anti-spam solution. The software contains several modules and a large collection of plug-ins that help make the filter effective. The modules in the form of executable modules include the mail filter, a daemon version of the SpamAssasin, a client for the Windows, rule updates module and a trainer module for Bayesian filter. The collection of plug-ins covers various aspects of spam detection such as whitelist/ blacklist management and others.

The description available at the publisher’s site about the plug-ins clearly shows that the developers have tried to cover most aspects of spam filtering. The original product from which this is developed is a reputed product too. Thus this is likely to be a very effective product that can help immensely in spam management. However, in the final count, what matters is how much of the spam is caught effectively. Other part of the same performance is what percentage of legit mail it filters out as spam. True performance can only be assessed after the filter has been in use for some time, after the Bayesian filter has trained for some time in the exact environment. So get it set up in your environment and check out for sometime and decide if you want to use the solution!

SpamAssassin is a project of the Apache Software Foundation (ASF). SpamAssassin was adapted for Windows by JAM Software. In combination with a MTA (e.g. Hamster or MS Exchange) it's a very powerful anti-spam solution.
The freeware contains, beside several modules, the following SpamAssassin components as
executable files for Windows (.exe):
- spamassassin.exe (mail filter)
- spamd.exe (daemonized version of SpamAssassin)
- WinSpamC.exe (client for spamd)
- sa-update.exe (SpamAssassin rule updates)
- sa-learn.exe (trains bayes filter with spam/ham mail)
